Chapter Twenty-One
As Kate sat on the bus, which had arrived on the dot, she wondered what Woody would say when she confessed to him what sheâd been up to. But she was glad sheâd made the trip because she had located some useful pieces of the jigsaw. She knew where Ben had been for the first twenty years of his life â living with his mother, so there was a good chance he could have found out the identity of his father. Had he any idea he had a twin somewhere when he was growing up? Could that be what had caused the rows between Benjamin and Jenny? Perhaps his mother thought it kinder and safer to keep the truth from the son that sheâd kept for her own?
Kate tried to imagine herself in Jenny Jordanâs position; if Jenny hadnât told Benjamin that he had a twin brother when he was young, surely, once she knew she was dying and didnât have long left, it would be only natural for her to tell Benjamin who his father was and that he was one of twins. Given that heâd left Liverpool shortly after his mother died, wouldnât it make sense that Jenny had only broken the news to him because she was dying? It would certainly be understandable. After which it would seem that Benjamin had gone down to Cornwall to trace his father and brother. The dates fitted. Kate wondered whether Henry Hedgefield had ever known that he had another son. And had he rejected him? If Benjamin had arrived out of the blue â perhaps full of hatred for the rich man who apparently hadnât wanted him â Kate could well imagine that some sort of fight might have broken out. Perhaps Aaronâs presumed version of events was rightâ¦
As she watched the rain lashing against the windows of the bus, Kate thought about how Benjamin might have reacted. Would he have resented his brother having all the advantages that money could provide? He may have felt cheated and angry. Kate felt sure that he probably had. The more she found out about Benjamin Jordan the sorrier she felt for him.
When she got off the bus in Church Street it was still only 11 oâclock. Should she have a wander round the shops? She didnât need to be back in the hotel until later in the afternoon, so there was still time to buy the underwear sheâd told Woody she needed. She could always tell him about her visit to Pretoria Road another day â perhaps when they were driving back to Cornwall?
The more Kate thought about all that she had discovered, the more she wondered if she could manage to keep all this exciting information to herself. The shops didnât seem very enticing, and she couldnât see the point of buying things she didnât really need to keep up the subterfuge. She just wanted to get warm and dry. Sheâd go straight to the hotel and get dried off before Woody got back from The Cavern.
